1) open your steam/steamapps/common/MedievalTotalWar2 and check the name of the .exe that launches this game.
NOTE: IF IT IS KINGDOMS.EXE THIS FIX IS NOT FOR YOU AND CLICK AIDENPONS LINK.
2) locate the Third age.bat file.
3) Open the batch file using notepad.
NOTE: If the option doesn't appear with right click. You have to locate the .bat file within notepads file/open command. Make sure you are searching for "all files" and not just .txt
4) Change the name of the .exe this batch file is opening to the file you checked in step 1. Make sure it is character specific and includes .exe at the end after editing.
Run the shortcut from the desktop. Should work fine.

Edit:
My third age.bat now looks like this:
cd ..\..
start medieval2.exe @mods\Third_Age_3\TATW.cfg

If you installed the Third Age mod into the mods folder.
(Most people would)
You need to move the mod back to the games mods folder. Out of the one that total war wraps its program in.
Or, if you don't understand that change your batch to this:
cd ..\..
start medieval2.exe @mods\mods\Third_Age_3\TATW.cfg

Make life easy and follow the above. Copying an executable and renaming it is considerably easier than changing batches for every mod that references kingdoms, which is most notable ones.
and I'm very certain we can squeeze another 10 guides in here
