and how can i see missions that i havent completed yet

Units can be brought back to full strenght by moving them into a city that has the buildings to build that exact unit type, and then retrain said unit over one turn. On the city screen, there are tabs for building, recruiting and retraining, go to the retrain one. If a unit has lost a greater number of men, then retraining it would need a full unit for recruiting to be available.

Missions can be seen (if you got any) by clicking on the envelope on the lower left, right next to the minimap.

thx
And how to keep veterancy of the units alive? Always lose it, when i merge units of the same type.

Don't merge them unless you have to, or merge them with units of the same level. Retraining has a much lower impact on loss of experience I believe...I've been playing with mods for years, so I'm not quite sure what happens with vanilla any more

If you're looking to expand the game/historical experience, I highly recommend Stainless Steel

ALWAYS merge units. Merging places those troops together with the same veterancy. Meaning that if you merge your armies after each fight it means that you'll be getting a smaller but also a more elite army due to the merging. This also prevents you from having 20 units with half the troops they can have and instead will give you 10 experienced full number troops.

Retraining is where you start to lose veterancy because those veteran troops are being supplemented with new troops with no veterancy.

@Ina

When you merge different vetereancy units, the veterancy sometimes get lost. Eperor_Peter is right, he said, just merging same veterancy level is a good idea. But its hard so creat 2 silver veterancy units to merge with each other. So it´s hard so hold the amount of soldiers of the squads high at all.

Unit experience averages out. This way actually gives you more, less experienced units, rather than a few very experienced units coupled with nonexperienced units. Look at it this way:

Let's say you end the battle with two units of knights. One unit has 10 guys left in it and one has 30 left. Both have one silver experience chevron (basically 4 experience points). By combining them, you would get a single company of knights with a silver chevron.

On the other hand, if you did NOT merge them and simply retrained, the company that originally had 10 knights would end up with only 1 bronze chevron, since the experience averages out. The company with the 30 knights would end up getting 3 bronze chevrons after retraining.

So now you're thinking, "it doesn't really matter whether you merge or retrain, because the numbers average out." Well I'll tell you now that Medieval II ROUNDS DOWN experience. This is what I mean (you have probably had this situation before):

You finish a battle with 10 companies of sergeant spearmen that each have 80% of their men alive. You notice that even though the battle was very long, none of your men gained any experience. Why? Because in each company, if 55 soldiers gain 1 chevron and 1 soldier gains nothing, the company as a whole is technically "not experienced" and shows no chevrons. When you merge, experienced soldiers clump together, and inexperienced soldiers clump together. So instead of 14 companies with .8 experience each (the game essentially counts that as nothing in the battle, even though it still keeps track of it on the strategic map), you would have ~12 companies with 1 experience. Isn't that much better?

Here's a very simple picture explanation;

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=829284851

2 unexperienced units

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=829284973

1 experienced unit AFTER merging

So it's up to you to accept someone's word with 80 hours in the game or accept someone's word with 1000+ hours in the game (steam doesn't show half because of retail outside of steam)

Here's a tip instead of completely merging units. Donate troops from full strength veteran units to slightly damaged raw or lesser quality units. If you don't "donate" an excessive amount of troops from the veteran unit it should have no detrimental effect on the units experience chevrons.

It will raise the quality of the damaged unit. When the veteran is retrained back to full strength there should be no dilution of quality (the trick is not to donate too many troops from the veteran, just a modest top up will do). I first started doing this way back in my Rome 1 days.

Veterancy and retraining is basic mathematics:
If one third of your unit remains with level five veterancy then replenishing it with level zero veterancy (regular retraining) will result in an average of level one veterancy also the result is closer to level two.
Which means merging it with other high level veterancy units will result in higher veterancy level.
