Medieval 2 Retrofit Mod?
I recall from a long time ago that one of the devs put out a retrofit mod that basically folded Kingdoms stuff into the base Medieval 2 to make a superior Medieval 2 experience. From what I recall it was quite fun.

Does anyone know where to get that mod now, and how to install it with Steam? The old version had an installer iirc, but I doubt that'd work with Steam.

Thanks :)

If this is the one you mean, make a physical local backup of your game folder somewhere on your computer prior to installing. That is one of the mods that can break your Medieval 2 forcing you to leave uninstalled for 30 days to allow Steam caching system to clear.

Geez, could be the one. Been so long it's hard to remember :) I recall the one I'm thinking of added some of the kingdoms units like those flame-thrower guys to the old M2 main campaign for byzantines and what not.

What's all this about breaking M2, though??? LOL, now I'm scared to try it @_@.

Just make a backup of your Medieval 2 folder to keep. Mods that replace vanila files, when a file matches in size and heading Steam will pick it up to replace for you so deleting all of Medieval 2 just replaces the modded file not knowing the difference. If that happens, you delete and replace with the backup, verify, and it is fixed. If you dont have a backup and it happens, you have to uninstall and wait 30 days to reinstall for it to work again.

In other words, back up, back up back up before you start installing mods!

Gah! Thanks for the explanation. Is there any way to keep Steam from doing that? Would disabling the "keep this game up to date" stop it?

Thanks, all.

Keeping a local backup of vamilla folder is the only way to avoid the 30 day cool down for the cache reset that we have found. Do keep in mind, there is no guarantee this will happen to you or that it will not.

Right on. Any chance you know if that included installer works if targeted at the Steam M2 folder? Or would I need to do it manually?

Explanation says it's mod foldered, unless you mess up the installaiton path you should be fine: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?118680-Retrofit-Mod-1-0-Released

The Retrofit Mod installs all game files into a separate mod path and does not modify any existing M2TW or M2TW: Kingdoms files. This protects the existing M2TW and M2TW: Kingdoms installations and allows multiple mods to be run from the same M2TW installation.

Path to start up bat file: [M2TW Path]\mods\retrofit\medieval2_retrofit.bat
Create a desktop shortcut and run it from there afetr you did this number:

Hate to necro a thread but just for everyone's sake the original download has been hacked and now has malware. It's a trojan. Triple confirmed it myself and the comments on the download also confirm it.

Well that sucks.

Thanks for the update man.

This is the original download link with over 300K downloads from August 2007: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=1581

Certainly not hacked or otherwise tempered with. Some AV programs regard the startup BAT file as 'injector' and\or complain about the exe format of the installer in general.

Just installed it myself without any problems (Avast is my AV)

Raising the dead on my own aged thread.

ModDB has the retrofit thing free of any potential malware :)

One thing that's throwing me though - they have retrofit 2.0 (on twcenter as well, and clean) that says MP retrofit thing... makes some units balanced for MP. I'm not 100% sure if it's ALL the stuff in 1.0 though or if it's ONLY affecting MP, anyone know?
