The gameplay in Chronicles is a stripped down / simplified version of what's in Godfall and it is (or can be) a lot shorter playthrough than Godfall. Because of that you might want to play it before you play Godfall but I would not say it is strictly necessary.
There are no narrative links between the games so you can play them in any order without being concerned about that.
Dread only lets you have a single party of characters per game. Chronicles and Godfall let you have multiple parties but you still only control one at a time. Godfall also adds some other systems that weren't in the previous games.
The equipment, skill and level up systems are also somewhat different between each game.
There are also differences in the combat mechanics with the largest change being from Dread to Chronicles.
