FYI this issue affects all machines with a certain kind of modern Intel chip. You can fix by changing your system environment variable:
Key: OPENSSL_ia32cap
Value: ~0x200000200000000

This also works with the other Roiland game, Trover Saves the Universe.

ive tried this and still didnt fix for me

I use pico 4 headset. Bought this game yesterday on sale and had the same problem with the game not starting. But the way I fixed this is by turning my laptops WiFi off and then the game works. The only problem is you can't use Virtual Desktop wireless when doing it. So it has to be wired connection! Boo

I have steam VR installed and fully up to date, I have tried the environment path thing, I have also tried to run the game as admin, I am on a gaming laptop that I know is capable of running higher demand games, and I am on a quest 2 with all of the correct software installed. It still doesn't work. ):

Are you getting a Steam Cloud error "Unknown" issue when you launch it (won't show on the headset, but will make a ding and show in the lower right corner of your desktop where steam notifications pop up)?

I bought this during the summer sale and haven't been able to launch it.

after trying all these options and still failing to load , all i got was a black screen and two glowing blue rings around my invisible wrists floating around in space but tracking the controllers of my quest 3 headset, i was about to give up .... but this game used to work on my pc a few years ago so why not now.
i used to use virtual desktop back then but now im using steam link, i tried my old virtual desktop and BOOM!!! the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game launched and played first time, unbelivable i thought...all that time messing around with drivers, updates , wires , wifi , settings and everything else i tried , it was infact just steam link not loading the game.
virtual desktop cost money its not free , were as steam link is free ,

VIRTUAL DESKTOP LOADS RICK AND MORTY VR GAME ON STEAM.

This environment variable expresses various processor capabilities, which can help define support for some newer Intel processors
Open the "System" menu in Settings (for example, right-click on the Windows Start menu and select "System")
Within the side-panel, select "Advanced system settings"
In the new "System properties" window, within the "Advanced" panel, click the "Environment Variables" button
At the bottom of the new "Environment Variables" window, within the "System variables" subsection, select "New" and enter the following values:
Variable name: OPENSSL_ia32cap
Variable value: ~0x200000200000000

Not only did this fix the issue for this game it also fixed four of my other VR games that were not working, some of which I got through the Oculus Store. Battlewake, MagicTableChess, and TroverSavesTheUniverse. Thank you so much.

Add this as a launch option on this game in steam if you don't want to mess with your windows environment variables. "cmd /c "set OPENSSL_ia32cap=:~0x20000000 && %command%""

The environment variable everyone else is suggesting can have other unwanted side-effects across your system.

Here are the steps to do this.
1. Go to control panel
2. Search for environment variables
3. Press on Edit the system environment variables`
4. Press Environment Variables at the bottom of the new window
5. Click on New at the bottom
6. For the variable name put OPENSSL_ia32cap
7. For the variable value put ~0x200000200000000
8. Press Ok and then Ok
9. Enjoy!

Trover works fine on my Meta Quest, Rick and Morty will not run - I only get that black box or in VR, the splash screen
