Struggling to catch anything beyond Betty Lake

I can get fish like crazy ice fishing or float fishing on Betty Lake but I'm having trouble getting bites anywhere else. I've tried multiple hooks and sizes with different baits but I think I'm missing something.

Can anyone give some tips for new players?

My tip.. is to grind XP and money at the first lake.. sell all fish. Stay there till you are level 10+.. then you can probably try other lakes and areas...

Tell us which lake you struggle with , and we can give advice.
But Large is right. I find many times players jump to next lakes to quickly before they have the equipment ( especially hook sizes ) to fish at that lake. Not saying it's your issue. But might be the case that you are using wrong hook sizes at other lakes. Tell us what you are trying to target and where , then we can help

Part of the problem was me confusing hooks like #7 and #7/0. When I activate hunter vision, are the visible fish actually what's in that area or is it just general? Also how far will fish swim to the lure/bait?

well my tip is your using poor hook size poor bait or somthing of the sort

If you hover over the hooks in the change size window it gives the "small to large" info.

Also, keep hooks 5 and under on all areas minus the Sea one and that will help,

small cutbait get fish like no one's business.

Float and size 3 or 4 hook with small cutbait ............you WILL catch fish.
