Taking the parrot's perch

I can get a hot chicken up to the parrot lobby and feed it to the parrot, but when I try to take the perch, the parrot won't let me, even if he's standing on the light-colored part at the edge of the cage. What's the trick to taking the perch?

did he eat the chicken? you have to grab it while he's eating.
