If it's for campaigns, going for big bonuses in the campaign you need tends to have better results.
None of the recent pets are for early game and for the most part they are not great for campaigns either.
They end up being great for dungeon teams but only after evolving them and the evolution conditions for them are not within reach of newer players.
If the guides you are talking about were already talking about dungeons, odds are that they are still relevant now.
Elephant is a very good defender(even a few k dmg after it beeing attacked) ,Santa(endless chocolate and a good healer),Firefox, best smith i think?
Otter free stuff when fed.
Hourglass, even if it takes really long to evolve.
Anyways,it depends on which element you need, how many possible classes you have for each role. Really good pets and good long-time investment are the numbers of how many % the class stats are boosted. The higher the better, but not always, there are also special abilities etc.
I'd say try to get all of the others you can get, some you can even get for free.
Then look what your missing with pet tokens.
So... I just found this today and found it helpful.
