White Day: A Labyrinth Named School

I thought this game was critically acclaimed ?
Hey there, sorry of this sounds uninformed but i'm kinda out of the loop.
I've been interested in this game for ages but never managed to get it myself because i heard it was a pain to get running since it didn't have an official Western Release back when i discovered it, and only recently did i find out that the game was properly released on Steam.
I'm surprised and kinda confused about the feedback it's getting though: up until now i had seen almost nothing but praise for this game, calling it a hidden gem and such, but now it's getting mixed reviews on steam. Can anyone bring me up to speed ?

I made a video on why I refunded my copy of the game:
https://youtu.be/1wcLFbq96-U

Though, as a quick summary:
The game isn't scary, the janitors and AI for the janitors are annoying and janky, the cat and mouse gameplay is boring, same goes for the puzzles, the ghosts are okay at best and overall the main gameplay loop is mediocre.

But others think this is the "scariest game ever made" and other things like that. You can always just buy the game, try it out for less than two hours and if you don't like it; issue a refund.

Becareful though, if you don't love this game then others will think your opinion is shameful and is bait.

the 2001 windows version is far more dark and scary, the remake is more "cartoonish" and action-oriented. I suggest to play the 2001 game that remains a masterpiece.

I'd love to but i can't find a copy of the original game to purchase online and i'm not fond of pirating stuff. Apparently the game was released in England in 2004 by a company called 4am entertainment ? Couldn't find a single copy on sale, so this steam version is looking like my only solution.

The original White Day is a horror cult classic. This is a remake. It's not the same game and, in my humble opinion, it pales in comparison to the original in many areas. That's not to say it's bad, because it's not, but I highly recommend playing the original.

The original Sonnori are long gone and there's no way to support the devs by purchasing the original game. I seriously doubt a new copy even exists anymore. Besides, even if you did find a legit version, you'd have a ♥♥♥♥♥ of a time getting it to run, and it would also be entirely in Korean. The official English version was scrapped and the game never saw any kind of official release outside of South Korea.

The version up on ModDB has been patched and translated by a fan. There's no reason at all to feel guilty about downloading it. It's true abandonware.

You'll need Locale Emulator to get it running properly: http://pooi.moe/Locale-Emulator/

And here's a guide: https://www.giantbomb.com/forums/white-day-a-labyrinth-named-school-255460/running-white-day-on-a-modern-pc-1797096/

The DX8 wrapper they suggested doesn't work for me, so I used dgVoodoo: http://dege.freeweb.hu/

Thanks for the rundown ! That's pretty much all the info i wanted to know :ranger_assault:
Getting the original game to run in english sounds like quite a process so i'll save it for later, but i saved all those links for when i need em.

It's honestly a lot simpler than it looks on paper.

White Day (2001) is indeed a cult classic. It is freely available on ModDB you can download it and play it since the old Sonnori went bankrupt and lost the rights. It has a very good english translation and patch which prevents any hassle in installing it. You can enjoy it and see why it's a classic.

This is a remake. Think of it as Resident Evil Remake. It has the same layout and plot, but different choices, different puzzles, QTEs \ cutscenes and an additional character with an all new storyline. It also has a simplier gameplay compared to the original and uses less items (for example in the original you had acess to some matches and a torch while here there's only a lighter to illuminate your surroundings, which was found very late in the original).

The negative reviews mostly come from korean players that were disappointed by the price and the bugs present at release, since the game was delayed several times. But this doesnt undermine its overall quality. It is a very good game.

Okay, thanks for letting me know ! I'll probably wait until i don't have as many games on my radar to try the original out, and i'll keep this remake in mind.

I didn't think your opinion is shameful or bait.. but since I keep seeing you pop up on here, I'm starting to believe it is.. kind of suspicious lol

..either that or you all are starting a white day hate group lol :P

(on a side note, the original game is extremely easy to run on Windows 7
for me.. and the Moddb.com version is pretty good except for dialog skips)

The dialogue skips are caused by a bug that speeds up the game. I can't remember off the top of my head what the fix is though.

How does that work? Not like the discussion page for a game is only allowed to have people who love a game. Simply telling people the problems I had with the game, so that they can make an informed decision on what they buy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sonnori didn't lose this copy rights and didn't disappear long ago.
Sonnori was acquired by Korean game company 'Netmarble' around 2012.
The copyright to Sonnori were transferred to 'Netmarble' but later, 'Lee Won Sool' (former CEO of Sonnori ) left "Netmarble's Subsidiary company". And he has re-owned Only 'White Day' Copyright.

I've got 82 hours in the game. Probably going to put another 15 or so into it to get all of the achievements. It's safe to say I like it a lot.

Amusingly enough, I hated it for the first two hours. I was ready to get a refund, but then I read a review that made me realize I hadn't put enough time into it, and then something just clicked and I started loving it. Really cool ghost designs!
