MAME Libretro versions and associated MAME versions (for romset versions).
As MAME is updated so are the arcade roms. Sometimes certain romsets seem to work better in certain situations. Below you can see what romset version that a few MAME Libretro emulators are synched with. So for example if you have a rom from romset 0.139 (typically these roms work with mobile MAME versions), you can see that you should use the MAME 2010 version to run it. If anyone has luck running a rom from romset 0.174 with the current mame_libretro.dll, please do post about it.

mame2000_libretro is for MAME 0.37
mame2003_libretro is for MAME 0.78
mame2010_libretro is for MAME 0.139
mame2014_libretro is for MAME 0.159
mame_libretro is for MAME 0.174
mame_libretro from the 1.0.0.2 core archive is for MAME 0.152
mame_libretro from the defender fix link is for MAME 0.159

This info was gleaned from the RetroArch app which can also be used to download stable cores.

Thing is though, I have ONLY been able to get the mame2014 libretro working. I can't imagine that every rom version is completely different for every mame emulator, but so far trying ANY non 2014 mame libretro has given me nothing (just the standard "arcade corrupt or blank screen").

I have also had no success getting Final Burn to run or any other emulator except for snes9x or bsnes. I havent tried any Genesis/NES emulators though ..

So far I have tried:

Yabause
Reicast
Final Burn
Scummvm

None of the above worked for me.

The only libretro's I've ever been able to run:

mame2014_libretro
bsnes_performance_libretro
snes9x_libretro

What my post iis attempting to indicate is that you will likely encounter more success using a rom from romset for mame version 0.159.(if using mame2014 libretro). You are correct, few roms change from version to version. Not every libretto core with the same name is the same name version, it depends on the build. You can check the name version of a libretto core using RetroArch app. This post is to offer info that could be helpful when all else fails.

You mentioned Final Burn Alpha. Do bear in mind that NEO-GEO titles emulate just fine in MAME provided you have a BIOS file to go along with it (neogeo.zip)

Just place your BIOS file in NRA:N's ROMs folder.

Thanks for the post. All of my Roms are from 0.139. The odd time a rom has crashed the arcade and I've been able to fetch a working rom from above or below. Mostly, 0.139 seemed the most stable for me. YMMV.

Ah yea .. I dont actually need Final Burn any more, but when I was trying to use it it wasnt working. But yes, I am currently using my Neo Geo roms with Mame 2014 without problems.

It was just more of a case of I just cant seem to get anything thats not mame 2014 or Snes to work.

To be fair, thats still a lot of things working. I just found it peculiar.

I suppose as a consolation, mgba_libretro.dll actually works inside of NRA:N. You just need to manually type in the rom filename in the Arcade Builder.
