The 2014 core uses 0.159 ROMs according to the github repository. https://github.com/libretro/mame2014-libretro
I'll admit, I still don't fully understand MAME ROM Sets myself, so I can't offer much in the way of support in that regard. But what I can do is help with the ROMs themselves.
My working Galaga ROM has a MD5 hash of: a21bd99331b380c25a1d288a6dae3f8e
You can use www.winmd5.com and compare the hashes with your ROM and see if they match.
I have a feeling you're onto something, and I'll be back with an update.
MD5 hash was different for my Galaga ROM, getting some ROM sets (0.138) for further testing.
EDIT: Side note, do you know much about CLRMame Pro?
CLRMame Pro rings a bell, but I can't recall what the program does.
Evidently it's a ROM set manager and updater. Since the software seems fairly complex, I wanted to see if I could get a quick answer about updating ROM sets to a specific version. From reading the documentation, it seems like I can as long as I download MAME 0.159 and use that as a reference for the profile. Not totally sure yet, though. I'll have to try it out.
