Video playback does work in the theater with webstreams, such as youtube. There are also a number of mini-games that players can play and interact with such as bowling, air-hockey, a lightgun game by the name of Zombie Problem 2 and a Arena FPS by the name of Aimbot.
Ok, that's actually better than I was expecting. Thanks.
What about the videos/music? Are those consistent for all players?
It's not a matter of anyone complaining. It's such a large technical hurdle that may never come to fruition because of how libretro's netplay work with the MAME core. It's possible to connect via RetroArch, but the inputs are massively bugged after the fact. It's something the team wouldn't be able to act on.
I switched back to mgba and I'm testing again now.
one other quick question. I noticed that the editor only has spots for 5 videotapes (well 6 but videotape 5 is listed twice). But there are a lot more videotapes than 5 in the room / around the areas. How do you edit the others?

Inside New Retro Arcade's Content folder are a few XML files that have the word default in them. You can save copies of these files, remove the word "default" from them and use them to replace your existing XML files so you can bring them up to date with the latest format. ArcadeMusic contains the VHS Tapes while ArcadeCartridges is for the gamebros. I suggest you replace both these files and try again with the gamebatte core.
I finally got one of the portables to work using the mgba libretto when it seems like it actually should have used the gamebattle one. None of the others work, though.
