YouTube links in VHS tapes
I'm unable to use any YouTube links with VHS tapes. I just get a black window in the preview panel in Arcade Manager, even with the default link of the NRA demo video. I found a few threads detailing a dump of DLLs and\or codecs, but the links were all old and no longer worked.

I installed the newest version of VLC on my PC and relaunched everything, but nothing has changed. Am I missing something obvious? Just want to attach a YouTube video to a VHS tape.

Thanks!!!

I never have luck in the Arcade Manager previews for the VHS tapes.
And I've found that some youtube videos will work and some won't, and then some will work but they take some time starting up.

The ones that take a while to start up I've deduced to be ones with ads being screened out.

I haven't figured out why some work and some don't, though. I've tried movies of the same bitrate/resolution and still found some working and some not. However, the ones that worked would always work.

The only way I've found to see if a video works or not is trial and error.

A couple that work for me that you can try:

Kung Fury (official video) - https://youtu.be/bS5P_LAqiVg
Reel Wild Cinema (official video by the current rights owner) - https://youtu.be/SFvFpEB4jrA

Also, the videos from Troma work for me, and they're also official, however most of them are a bit on the NSFW side so I won't post their links.

If Kung Fury or Reel Wild Cinema don't work for you, though, then there's something else likely causing a problem.

Have you tried actually playing the VHS tape in the game itself and bypassing the preview within the Arcade Manager? I’m just curious to know if it’s just a problem with the preview function or an issue with the actual video format.

I can confirm that the vhs previews don't work. At least they don't for me. And all the youtube videos I have in the manager are confirmed to work in the game.

The music tapes preview just fine.

Hi guys,
Unfortunately, I have the same problem.
I also suspect that it is related to the promotional video at the beginning of the videos.
All Youtube videos WITHOUT advertising will be played in NRA.
Youtube videos with advertising are not played and the buttons of the VHS recorder can not be selected and pressed any more. Thus, the video cassette can not be removed from the drive.

I also tried to check if the plugs are correct in the TV and in the video recorder. But unfortunately I can not look so far behind the devices. :steammocking:

Thank you all for your replies! The links provided in the 1st response did not work for me, nor have any other internet links. I will try adding a local file, but it's starting to look like the problem might be me. I'm all updated and have no problems watching any video files types or streams (to my knowledge), so I wouldn't think it was codecs. I could be wrong...

Do the VHS tapes auto-play when you insert them? I have no luck trying to push "play" in-game, as any interaction with the player after I insert the tape instantly ejects the tape. I assume that meant I would not be able to mess with buttons, but maybe I'm just not trying hard enough to press "Play"???

Do I have to turn on the projector in the cinema??? I'm stumped!

edit - local files play fine, even from USB drives.

The VHS tapes should begin automatically playing when inserted into the player.

And most take a while to initiate.
I often have time to move back to where the tapes are in the back of the room before the film starts, so be sure you're giving them time to start.

Me too.
Maybe is related to promotional video at the beginning of ALL youtube videos at this moment?

This is the only reason I want to use the anymore and I am really disappointed I can't get anything to work.

Youtube is constantly changing their system so unless their's a new update probably won't work. I just resorted to using a youtube exporter to make local files.

Some information that will hopefully help:

  • YouTube playback in NRA:N itself is broken due to an outdated version of youtube-dl. Just replacing it with a newer version doesn't work, but I've released a fix for this here.
  • Do NOT update the version of VLC that's included with NRA:N as this will break video playback.
  • If you're using Arcade Builder, the official configuration utility, the VHS tapes are incorrectly added as Cassette tapes to your layout file. You have to manually edit the layout file to fix it.

I tried that method! It didn't work!

Replacing the Youtube-dl worked for me. It still is hit-or-miss with YT videos, but the VHS player actually works now with an eject button if things go wrong.
