I don't see it as depressing, I think she deserved it for how selfish she was being
The Magician made Iva a deal. Iva would kill her brother, and the magician would seal his soul into a puppet. As long as the illusion can be maintained, the siblings can live happily ever after (thus the incense, spellbook). As soon as Ivry found out the truth, though, Iva had to pay the price with her life - her soul going to hell for murder, and Ivry would turn into a puppet - with his soul lingering in limbo. So, by trying to seek the truth, he basically screwed them both over.
What I don't get is how he ended up breaking the illusion in the first place. Must be the demon cat's doing...
