Post Mortem

No Main Menu
Hey, I have no high hopes in getting this fixed, as there's no reference in the whole web about this issue.

I was having the 3D error, which I fixed with the regular fix (256 color, run as administrator, compatibility mode PLUS, setting only one monitor (no matter what I did, nothing worked until I disabled my second monitor, don't ask me why)).

So, I finally made the game to start, I see the Microid screen, and then the red background with Postmortem title above... and that's it. The main menu doesn't load at all, I stare at the red empty screen for minutes and nothing changes. As further details, I can't see the mouse anywhere, but it's not completely frozen, since the music keeps playing in the background, nor it CTD either.

I'm absolutely out of ideas on how to fix this. Any help would be appreciated.

I sure this game needs more than 256 color mode.

Disabled that too, still the game starts, but the Main Menu is still missing.
So, the problem remains.

I can't see the mouse. I can't see New Game, Load, Options... anywhere. Just "Post Mortem" on a red screen.

I hear the music in the background and I can quit the game with alt+f4, so it's not completely frozen. :(

I didn't need to do any compatibility mode things for windows 10. But if I were setting it, I'd probably pick either XP or windows 7 and let it's color mode default.

It I run dxdiag and look at the display tab, it says I have DirectX Version 12 with Feature Levels: 12_1,12_0,11_1,11_0,10_1,10_0,9_3,9_2,9_1

The Store page indicates that it needs direct x version 9c which I think may be related to the feature levels starting with 9.

If you haven't you might go to the properties page for the game and try to verify game files in case something got corrupted.

Verified files, and reinstalled from scracth. Still the same.

I have Windows 7 and directx 11.

Maybe I have to play the game in window mode? But I'm unable to do that, if I make the player.ini with the "800 600 32 0 BaseCMO.cmo" line, the 3d error will pop up again, and I can't even get the game started. (I also tried with 8, 16, 32, since I don't really know which I should put anyway, and every time is the same).

One of the other conversations said: "you also need to lower your screen resolution to 1920x1440 or lower if you have your resolution above that."

I have mine at 1920 x 1080 and don't have any problem with full screen mode.

My resolution is also 1920x1080 :(
I've tried lower that, just in case, and no changes either.

I don't know if this helps (they likely updated it to bring it to Steam) - I have the original boxed version (yes I bought it again on Steam for the ease of installing) - anyway the original version says:

window 98/Me/2000/XP
32MB Direct 3D (DirectX 7) compatible 3D video card

This might help if you are trying out compatibility settings - and the info on the store page doesn't work...

... Edited to add - yes I'm a collector of things - and I rarely throw out the boxes for adventure games I like...

As a note, because I have DirectX 12 when it asked me if I wanted to install something called Direct Play I clicked No... It didn't seem to need it and I've played it completely through...

Glad to hear it worked!

NS Plover - Uhm, that's interesting. What it says on the box. But unfortunately, I have no idea as how to tell the game, or windows, or anything to use another directX apart from the one I already have, which is 11. Anyway, I think it shouldn't be a problem and it should be compatible with the previous ones, but really, I'm not an expert in this matter. (Even you say you have 12 and it works, so...)
I didn't say earlier, but I have a Geforce 1070. I will try to tweak some of that 3D config to see if it gets me anywhere, but it's getting really frustrating at this point. I really wanted to play the game :(

CrusaderQueen - I think I have tried every single combination of compatibility settings on the .exe, on both of them (Game.exe and PostMortem.exe) Did you have the "Run as administrator" enabled?. I'm gonna try the one you say, but the problem is that it doesn't really crashes, it's that the main menu will never show up (only the red screen with "PostMortem" on the top, but no "New Game", "Load", or anything), but the game can still run with the music on the background forever. And I don't see the mouse either, but I know it's somewhere, 'cause if I click blindly everywhere, sometimes it leads me to another red empty screen :(

Sorry if that was not helpful... No other ideas...

I think I missed the windows 7 bit before - sorry - no idea how steam or anyone else supports this on windows 7 - if Microsoft doesn't...
