The game has a 90's vibe (intentionally). Looking at the Roadmap it looks like Don (solo Dev with mad skills) is wrapping the game up. Wouldn't hurt to grab it now and start learning the systems.
Realistically, aside from the main story line not being finished yet (2 of 3 chapters done) ... he could slap "1.0" on it tomorrow.
In all likelihood you'll know within 2 hours if you like it. Most "haters" I've seen complain either:
A) The graphics are "dated" ... well ... uhm ... yeah, I guess you could say that since that's the intended look.
B) Turn-based ground combat and/or realtime space combat. Some seem to HATE that the space combat is not turn-based, and don't seem to spend the time to read the tutorial (which is very good). Since you can pause as much as you like you can essentially play like it's turn-based! Others seem to hate the turn-based ground combat and call it "dated" ,.. uhm ... again ... what can you say.
Regardless, there are separate difficulty sliders for ground/space so if you find you don't really enjoy one you can adjust it to make it super easy. I don't normally play games on harder difficulties but I do play this game with both Space and Ground combat difficulties turned up one notch.
If you're not turned off by either of these things within 2 hours ... I suspect you'll love the game.
My none-bug complaints so far would be that the combat can be pretty slow at times, and sub-targeting being standard rather than optional contributes to that.
It's got flavours of Starpoint Gemini 2, Rebel Galaxy, Astrox Imperium, Starfield, Shadowrun and someone called it Kenshi in space (which seems appropriate too).
I love the "level the skills you use" way of building characters. The hacking mini game is a refreshingly good variant on lock-picking. Raiding a pirate ship felt right (and then I learned what I should have brought along!)
Only caveat is that it took about 4 hours to get to the ship (playing the intro) - so if you are familiar with X-Com and turn based combat - then I would skip the Dauntless start during the first 2 hours to get a better feel for the whole game. (Dauntless introduces the back story so play it if your happy with the game )
Overall - I can't wait to start exploring more of the galaxy.
