The beacons also let you jump between systems so once you drop a beacon in a system, that list of deployed beacons will let you jump to any of those systems instantly for the cost of fusion cells, I believe, also sold at the equipment vendor, but you start with 3000 so it will last you a while. If you mine wrecks in the systems you often get them when the wreck is finished.
I've probably got about 30 or 40 beacons deployed now. I drop them all the time to go back to an area I've got drones mining, and then just leave them to build my trade network up.
You buy them from the ship equipment vendors. Your first one for Achmedius is free. Any system you've placed a beacon at will have an * by it's name. Also, beacons allow you to translocate to any system with another beacon via the jump gates. ( Have to be in close proximity)
