I'd say the best advice I can give is:
1) Take your time and enjoy, there is no real end to the game. If you get bored at some point, put the game down for a while and come back in a few months - I'm always adding content. Saves will never be wiped.
2) Make sure to get your mercs on the trade station in Achmedius as soon as you get into space - there are 4 on the trade station. That way, whatever you choose to do, you will be developing your crew's skill over time.
3) Space combat is the fastest way to make money in the early game (sell looted ship equipment and take incursion mission). Check out the space combat guide on the wiki - there is a lot of info on that site - https://stellartactics.gamepedia.com/SPACE_COMBAT
4) Buy drones as soon as you can once you have your FTL drive. Scan planets and deploy drones on planetary resource nodes for passive income. More info in the in-game guide. Press "H" and then select the guide button at the top of the screen.
5) There is an endless random dungeon in Achmedius (mission taken on the trade station). You can use this to gear up until you get your FTL Drive - then - head out into the universe and take missions from faction agents on trade stations for more variety.
6) Salvage unused gear for components so you can craft better equipment over time. Some of the best gear in the game can be crafted for both ships and your crew. More info can be found in the salvaging and crafting sections of the in-game guide and the wiki:

For space combat...its going to be tough until you can upgrade your warp core. The core is essentially the most important piece of your ship, because without a good core nothing else will work well.
Also, dont be afraid to turn the combat difficulty down to easy until you get the hang of it and some better modules. Once you get a "rare" or better warp core, you can risk going up to normal. Avoid taking on the 3 ship incursions though until youre sure your ready.
Loot in Space: The best stuff drops from "skull" enemies. These can spawn randomly if youre carrying something of "value".. You will know because it will say Hostile Ships inbound and youve been scanned...that means they a-commin to take your stuff. The other way to get skull enemies is to turn up Incursions to frequent in the options menu. They can spawn in as incursion ships as well.
Dont mine in the Mace... kill stuff or run the trade net until you can get something with cargo in the thousands and 5 or 6 weapon mounts so you can defend yourself when all your turret mounts are mining beams. Id suggest the Heron or Tarsus for starting mining.(I went with heron because its fast with good cargo).
For trading: A good beacon net of systems is key. Choose systems that have max or near max economies...you can tell by looking at them on the map and looking at the colored lines down the bottom left when you click on a system. Once youve built up 30 or so of these, running the trade net with Beacons becomes very fast. Btw, tip on placing your beacons: When you warp in, fly to the biggest trade station in the system. Stay outside its grav well and start looking around for one of those jump nodes. You can also cycle through them on the navigation pane to the right. Your searching for the closest one to you and hence, closer to the station. Use your beacon on that one by hitting "Translocate:" down in the bottom left. Its a purplish Icon....the next pane that comes up will have Use Beacon down near the bottom. Trade net is best used by searching sell orders first, and *then* buy orders. Youre looking for stuff that has good margins and lots of stock. There are a *lot* of items to trade, so familiarize yourself with the costs of high profit items. Once you have 4 or 5 million in trade credits, you can start dealing the really expensive items with the best margins.
You can purchase faction gear from another NPC in the same staging area using tokens earned from faction missions. Make sure to pick up the free translocator on the faction vendor NPC so you can teleport out mission areas and stations back to your ship.
Once you get a FTL drive and leave Achmedius, there are faction agents on all friendly stations in the universe.
Thanks dev
By the way, I love the game !
Sounds like your using the starter ship? if so forget mining for not until you get a bigger cargo hulled. The starter ship is a decent fighter so use it to kill pirates for loot and good buying prices on the trade net.
Get your self about 15 beacons and place them where trade stations.
Ok so the trade net only works IF you have placed beacons at syetems with stations. The trick is to go into the Sell selection and find something you want to buy, DO NOT buy until you found the prices in the Buy selection. i found medical stuff, neotoxins, refined ore and sealed container to sell best (its not always).
Selling is the menu where you will be buying to sell for a profit.
Buying is where you sell the cargo you just buyed for a profit.
Fighting Pirate ships with a skull can/could drop legendary loot worth 100.000's of credits but are "harder" to fight, sometime loot you could use your-self to upgrade your ship. This is maybe to best way to make credits (at the start)
ALSO! when your thinking about buying a new ship for hulling more cargo make sure you have AT LEAST 5 million extra credits because you'll wont have enough money to buy cargo to fill that ship. an keep the starter ship its worth keeping since its a good fighter coz merchant ship (early) are terrible fighting pirates.
Having as big a trade net as possible is the key to making money on it...The more places you have to buy sell everything, the more chances the game will roll good trades and the more places you can buy high value items.
Also, yeah, what dude said above is totally true...low tier merchant ships are terrible for fighting..Just stick to your guns with starter ship until you can afford a Heron/Tarsus which can deal with most any piratical incursion.
