TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE
Here is a list of the most common problems and solutions.

Check that your computer meets minimum requirements
You can find the the minimum requirements on the store page.

Verify your game install through Steam
The most common problem is that Steam may have partially downloaded or incorrectly updated the game. You may also have corrupt files after install in some cases. Make sure to verify your install through Steam if you encounter any major issues.

Update your drivers
Update both your video card drivers and audio drivers if they are out of date.

Make sure the game is being run as an Administrator
First, find the game folder. In Steam, right click Stellar Tactics in your library. Select Manage->Browse local files. This will open the game folder.

You can permanently set the "StellarTactics.exe" to be run as an administrator by right clicking the "StellarTactics.exe" file in the game folder, select properties->Compatibility tab->Select "Run this program as an administrator" and then click the "Apply" button. This will ensure that the game has read/write privileges when saving games and modifying settings.

The game locks up occasionally or crashes
Try capping the games FPS at 60FPS in the video options menu. In some cases, setting this in your video driver settings will also help.

I switched to windowed mode and back or changed resolution in game and my screen is scaled or looks wrong
This only happens if your desktop has been set with scaling above 100%. The solutions are:

A) Exit the game and launch the game again

B) Permanent solution:
  • Open the game install folder
  • Right click the StellarTactics.exe file and select "Properties"
  • Select the compatibility tab
  • Click the Change high DPI settings
  • Check the "Override high DPI scaling behavior and make sure "Application" is selected in the drop down box

Problems saving the game
  • See the section above about launching the game as an administrator.
  • Check that the hard drive where Stellar Tactics is installed has enough disk space.
  • See the section at the bottom of this post related to various anti-virus and malware software that could cause issues with saving the game or otherwise saving settings etc.

The game exits/locks up/crashes when moving between areas
If the game is locking up when loading areas, set the FPS slider to 60fps in the video options menu.

SB X-Fi Audio - The game randomly locks up in combat or otherwise when using SB X-Fi Audio as your audio source
Drivers from the manufacturer are broken and have been for a long time for OpenAL. Your best option is to try and set another default audio source.
1) In Windows, use the search field on your taskbar and search for “sound” – then select “sound settings” (assuming Windows 10)
2) In the window that pops up, under “Output” select the drop-down field “Choose your output device”.
3) If you have another audio source, select it. If not - I recommend refunding the game as it will have numerous issues with SB X-Fi Audio.

Disable the Steam overlay for Stellar Tactics
Some drivers conflict with the Steam overlay and can cause lockups and other issues. You can turn the overlay off for Stellar Tactics two ways:
1) While in the game, press Shift-Tab->Select "Settings" at the bottom of the overlay->Select the In-Game tab->Uncheck "Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game". Exit and restart the game.
2) From your Steam library, right click Stellar Tactics->Properties, deselect "Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game"

Low framerate on Laptops
Check that your system is correctly set to use your "dedicated graphics accelerator". Many laptops come with two GPU's, one that uses low power for general desktop applications and a second dedicated game GPU (NVidia, AMD) for games. You may need to manually set your laptop to use your dedicated game graphics accelerator with Stellar Tactics because automatic GPU switching can fail in some cases.

Low framerate on Radeon
1) Radeon Settings
2) Click Gaming
3) Scroll down to Stellar Tactics and click on it
4) Change Wait for Vertical Refresh to Always Off

UI Scaling issues on 4k displays or other displays
If you are having issues running the game in 4k mode, make sure your monitor is scaled in you PC's settings to 100% - many scale by default to 125% which will break the game display.

An alternate and somewhat permanent solution for the game is the following:
1) Open the game install folder
2) Right click the StellarTactics.exe file
3) Select the compatibility tab
4) Check "Disable fullscreen optimizations"
5) Check Run this program as an administrator
6) Click the Change high DPI settings
7) Select both check boxes - for the second check box select "Application" from the drop down box

The game locks up after creating a new character and pressing the “Start Game” button.
This problem is very rare. You can try a various fixes noted above. In general, setting your FPS to 60fps in the video options menu and launching the game as an administrator should resolve this issue.

AMD Video cards
If you are running the following GPU's, AMD is no longer supporting them. Stellar Tactics will only work if you are running the Radeon Software Crimson Edition Beta for these specific video cards - link below.

AMD Radeon™ R5 235X, Radeon™ R5 235, Radeon™ R5 230, Radeon™ R5 220, Radeon™ HD 8470, Radeon™ HD 8350, Radeon™ HD 8000 (D/G variants), Radeon™ HD 7000 Series (HD 7600 and below), Radeon™ HD 6000 Series, and Radeon™ HD 5000 Series

AMD support site with drivers - https://www.amd.com/en/support

Select your card - then your OS at the selected page and then choose the Crimson Edition Beta version of the drivers.

FSecure, AVG, Avast and HitmanPro
You may need to exclude the entire "Steam" folder and the "Stellar Tactics" folder from F-secure, AVG, Avast and especially "Deepguard". The game may not launch correctly and can have numerous issues if you have these applications installed. For Avast, just scan the Stellar Tactics game folder and exclude it from scans.
