if you just want to get into point-and-clicks in general, any of these from the golden age of sierra's point-and-click games: police quest; space quest; king's quest; laura bow; gabriel knight; and quest for glory.
keep in mind all these series have a bunch of games in them so if you're really in it for the long hault, take your pick. they're all different in their own ways but my heart holds a special place for king's quest due to it being the first point-and-click I ever played. gabriel knight comes in close second because I love murder mysteries (plus tim curry is in it! who doesnt like tim curry???)
lucasarts has its own share of amazing games in the genre. the monkey island series is one; you've also got sam and max; lastly, you've also got the indiana jones series. grim fandango is an absolute classic. if you haven't played it yet, definitely go for that one as a must--gog has a windows 7/10 updated version, I believe.
for lucasarts, the gem that holds a special place in my heart is the dig. it wasn't a commercial success and kind of flew under the radar considering the amount of talent put behind it. the few puzzles in it are absolutely mind-breaking due to their difficulties. I didn't finish this game until I was an adult. 9-year old me just gave up. but, I love the story due to my love of space and aliens so if that's up your alley, give it a go. it's also a beautiful game in pixel art standards.
sorry if i went on a rant there and you weren't interested in the rest lol. older point-and-clicks are way different than modern ones so have fun!
As for your last quote, I have to ask: Have you played Thimbleweed Park? This game came out a few months ago and as I've heard it's following the old school point and click formula.
did you know the first king's quest actually got a reboot? it's interesting to see point-and-clicks haven't been forgotten.
Point and click games definitely haven't been forgoten. And maybe they're gonna be supported even more now that we've got consoles such as the Switch, which already has Thimbleweed Park on the games lineup and it's gonna have Syberia this month.
I've got some other reviews for some new games as well. Sadly, I did not like Duke Grabowski at all. And King's Quest 9 is pretty terrible to me (you should try out the first Chapter though, since it is free). The Journey Down: Part 1 did alright as a small company. As well as Order of the Thorne. Not spectacular, but pretty solid games.
The series is definitely a good one as it is very cheap. It is less point and click than most and definitely can take some getting used to the style, but I didn't ever regret playing the series.
