Second and night shift ?
Help me veterans, I'm new to the game..

What's the benefit for second and night shift on Hydroponic farms, I assume that crops grow on their own in this game ?, so ppl. who work there do they only gather crops or I'm mistaking it ?

Like you think, all food producing buildings only need a single shift of labor. The reason for the other shifts is so that you can balance out your service usage. Set your food production building shifts as evenly as possible to spread out your populations usages of services as evenly as possible. This lets you get away with having fewer service buildings.

If you have all your farms set to the same shift, it means you'll need more service capacity because all of your colonists will be trying to use them on only 2 of 3 shifts, and they will be left unused the 3rd.

And no, they do more than simply harvest the crops. It's never really specified, but you can imagine that while the systems would be largely automated the workforce would be planting them, running test for diseases and pests and treating them if any occur, monitoring growth rates and soil health, harvesting them, checking on their marijuana grows they hid in the back corner, etc.

LOL sure nuff! lol

Just to add in with Ericus1's fantastic xpla...

You'll notice service bldgs can only handle x number of people at one time. So, if everyone's workshift is set to morning... they all have their off time in the afternoon and evening... which means they'll all be trying to use those services at that time and may become unhappy if they tried to access a service that was already full. That's the benefit of switching up some workshifts to afternoon / pre-evening. You don't really want to set workshifts to graveyard shift since that puts a hit on... ?morale? if I remember right. The exception is the 'work-aholics' which don't care. But, it can be sometimes tricky keeping the right dweller in the right shift slots in order to keep workaholics in graveyard shift so....

@Mardoin - if you meant "Heavy Workload" (and night shift alike) it decreases Sanity (and if it goes below 70 then a +5 on Morale is lost either). Sanity => handle with care ^^'
