1:11 male to female would mean 1 fertile couple at a time, instead of a potential 6 fertile couples with a 1:1 ratio. And if that individual male doesn't have a high enough comfort to be interested in having a child, you are SOL.
But yeah, as mentioned the game requires couples. Figure it's important to mention that the sexy trait is a huge boost to fertility - equivalent to about a 50 comfort boost - and you want to avoid sending seniors, who can't breed, middle aged, who can become seniors in as little as 1 Sol, and other gendered colonists, who don't count at all.
So balance and age are key.
A sexy idiot is better than an asexual genius.
Personally I think it is important to have an infirmary in the dome since logically a mother would LIKE THAT. Know nothing about under the hood, just seems like a good thing.
I had one case (maybe game 3 or so) that the baby was born on touchdown. Sooooo :D.
