Vegan Achievement
are there any tricks to achieving that?
Ive tried only importing them but that only leads to about 100 to 150 before I usually either only get tourists with the vegan trait or the old ones die off before new ones spawn

and tourists do not seem to count

breeding also doesnt seem to work

help pls?

I checked the source code.
Its a bit wonky here.
The function CheckTraitsAchievements() runs everytime ANY colonist gains a trait.
It then collects ALL the colonists and counts the traits and goes through the various achievements to grant them.
If you have vegans it just counts them into a pool.
If that pool is 200 or greater you get the achievement.
You just need one colonist anywhere to gain any trait and if you have 200 vegans that achievement hits.
With all this talk about vegans, I all of a sudden have a big desire to grill a fat juicy steak.

You could try posting "Meat Is Murder" signs in all the domes.

All you need to do is have 200 vegans in the colony.
No timeframe.
It occurs naturally if you play one game long enough and have hundreds of colonists.
or, import as many vegans as possible everytime you have free space to put them.
Nothing says you need to finish the game. Nothing says you need to have a good game either.

Just like the achievement, The Watney Challenge.
You just have to pass the founder stage with one colonist. Nothing says he has to live past day 11.
That achievement should take you about 15 sols with building the dome and aux stuff needed and then end the game.

This is one of the only ones I have left as well, and I haven't made a specific attempt at it yet, but I did read a few things on it.
Firstly, I've heard (but have not confirmed) that the achievement only checks when someone gains the vegan trait. So if you imported 300 vegans and no else and didn't allow births, you'd never get the achievement, but if you added one non-vegan and they developed the vegan trait, it would then trigger. Again, I do not know if this is true, but I've not seen anyone state that it's false.
Second, and the reason that the first is all important, if you play as Blue Sun you can buy applicants, so after you've gotten late game and have a massive supply of funding, you could manually flood the applicant pool to significantly boost the number of vegans available. So long as that first thing is true, that won't immediately give you the achievement, but it may not be a huge waiting game after that if you import over 200 vegans.

Alternatively, if you just keep building bigger (and your computer can handle it) you'll eventually just have so many colonists that the natural rate of vegan occurrence will give it to you. Based on estimates from longer saves I've played, I think you'd probably get it naturally between 2k and 3k colonists. Personally, I don't think my current computer will deal with that well, so I'll be trying the Blue Sun method when I get around to it.

The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Okay, that's good to know. I guess the other stuff I said still stands, but it's not as restrictive. You could still have over 200 vegans and not have any colonists at all get traits for a little while, but if it triggers on any trait added to any colonist, it wouldn't be very long at all. If you had a functioning school system it'd reasonably take at maximum 5 sols, likely less. The Blue Sun method definitely sounds viable for those who don't build mega colonies.

like I said if you do not explode your number of colonists its pretty difficult to have more than 500 to 1k usually (imo anyways)

and vegans die more quickly than they respawn in the pool
but ill try to cover the whole map with domes then ty
Hedning Aug 7, 2021 @ 10:18am
I have 1600 colonists and 86 vegans. I have 512 applicants and 41 of those are vegans. So what the other guy said is likely correct, that you need about 3k colonists for it to trigger naturally.

Maybe project morpheus has a chance to give vegan? It says perks and vegan is a quirk, so maybe not.

Maybe you could also just keep importing tourists as those add more applicants.

This is where the Blue Sun strat comes in, you can buy new sets of applicants, so you can wait until late game and stock up a ton of funding and then spam buy more so you can have them all in the pool at the same time rather than having them trickle in. That way they're all in a similar age range so you can increase your vegan population faster than they die off from old age.
Assuming the incidence rate of the vegan trait is 1 in 15 (200 in 3000), you should on average get about 3 vegans for every 500M funding spent on applicants. So it'd be about 30B to buy 200 vegans, but ideally you'd be late enough in the game when you'd start considering this that you'd already have some vegan colonists, so the total cost would likely be less. Plus, funding is like Blue Sun's whole deal, so it's probably quite feasible to do it that way.

I got that without trying, but think -- as someone said -- it was on a map which had lots of people. So growing you population is likely the key.

I also wondered how odd that achievement was since unless you had the DLC with husbandry (which doesn't seem to be popular and the screenshots were not the least bit enticing) EVERYONE is actually a vegan on Mars LOL if you are only growing the grains, veggies and legumes that the farms and hydroponics supply :D.

There is actually a performance penalty to colonists that are vegan if they either live near or work at a ranch.

I thought it was comfort penalty if they were in a dome with a ranch, comfort boost in a dome with a farm, and aren't able to work in ranches at all
