And yeah, any large transfer amounts I set up a transport on a route. I have several transports for that purpose.
Not sure what you mean by drones are unreliable, it should not be unreliable - IF you have more than enough materials, which is also true for the shuttles (only having a little more than the minimum is not sufficient cause they will fight over that extra little bit trying to satisfy all the demands)..
Early game, transports are your best bet. Their speed may seem unimpressive, but 30+15 cargo is no joke. They'll easily move large piles of goods across the map. Drones can also access them like mobile supply depots, making them super handy for building sensor towers or minor outposts.
The only times things get backed up is when I build wonders. In that case I disable shuttle deliveries and use transports. So I have not troubles with shuttles for everything else.
If someone DOES need to experiment with multiple shuttle bays, one technique is to make one materials and one people, to guarantee that each is being addressed.
I also have a chain of drone depots but that dosnt work very well.
The rc hauler thing is a bit difficult to automate because he donsnt have the same logic as the air ports do so he keeps going even when the destination is over flowing and the start is empty.
but my current set up bearly holds up and i have like 15 or so fuel refineries to keep up.
