aprtments vs smart complexes?
so i'm stuck right in the middle at the moment, i havent got to the arcology at the present, which one are you using, pre arcology, smart houses or apt? soon as i built smart houses they ditched the living quarters and the apartment for the smart home, quicker than i ditched my lying cheating exwife lol... cheers

I avoid the smart housing because of the electronics cost and maintainace.

I avoid the smart housing because of the decreased capacity, the cost, and the fact my normal dome setups mean that I don't need the benefits it offers.

I mean they would work great for any dome where workers were outside. Like afungus farm, geologists, polymer factory, etc.

The higher comfort restores more sanity and should prevent them form losing sanity. Maybe even enouhg to work 3rd shift?

However like I said that electronics cost is a real pain.

You have the entire map to use, you dont need to cram everything you own into liek 4-5 sectors. So that means you can place smaller domes.
If you provide enough service building like diner, bars, shops etc. just go with apartment. Late game though you'll have problems anyway to provide homes for your colonists since they give birth like crazy, so might as well cramped them up while you can lol. Other type of housing will just be a waste of space. You may want to ignore the research that increase the birth rate or something (forgot which one).
I agree with Bored Peon, electronics can become a problem and you don't want to have tons of smart complexes that will eat up your supply.

Without modding the Smart Complexes to offer as much room as the regular apartments, I don't really see their purpose. It is easy to keep colonists happy without smart homes, and I'd rather have more people in each block to keep jobs running.
-10 sanity for working outside (extractor), -5 if the person is content.
Night rest in normal houses (small ones) gives +5 sanity back.
Overall smart complexes are like smart phones for i-diot people. You don't need them and would be better without them, too much trouble for to little gain especially if you are doing hard scenario with heavy weather where you can't waste any resources.

I think what it's ultimately going to come down to for me is whether the loss of dome space from their lower capacity (and thus need to build more of them) makes up for not needing to dedicate as much space to infirmaries. But given that you can fit three infirmaries into the space one apartment takes up, I doubt it will. I'll probably just use them in niche situations.

If there was a smart apartment version, I'd definitely use them to decrease infirmary demand.

Interesting, what arw your thought on arcology, what are tenant numbers like, im researching that at the moment, my only concern with those is that i will need to either use that or the recycled water... In the center...?

Longterm I'd rather have the Arcoogy or a more unique spire - You can make up for the water usage with evaporators. You can't add more housing to an already full dome.

I don't know, I'm not very impressed with arcology; it just doesn't feel like the housing you get out of it is worth taking up your spire slot, especially when if you're running out of room for people, the oxygen/water/upkeep cost of just tossing down a new small dome is so low. I think I'd rather shove in more apartments and make up for the lowered comfort off housing with hanging gardens, or an upgraded medical spire. But I need to try out more combinations to see how I like them in practice.

That said, arcology is probably worth it for me to use in my current game, since I got a breakthrough tech that improves work performance of the residents.

For me, the Water Reclamation spire should only be used in a farm focussed mega dome, anything else and it's a wasted slot.
The Arcology is amazing in small domes, but loses it's usefulness in larger domes. I mean basic dome has 6 slots and 1 spire, but mega has 24 slots and 1 spire, so proportionally can't add as much.
Sanitorium is nice, but you never need more than 2, so I make specialised rehab domes for them.
I find the medical spire completely useless since you can just build 3 infirmaries in a single spot and that's fine even on a mega dome.

As for housing, I always use appartments. The capacity is far more useful. I also started using the Psychologist commander, so everyone gains 10 sanity while sleeping, which completely offsets the loss from working outside.

It's all situational! If you have a water constrained map, you'll make reclaimation spires. If you dont get early bigger domes, you want acrologies, if you're swimming in water, make garden spires.
