"Too far from drone commander" - No idea....
Probably a beginner question, but I can't see to understand the concept so far.

I want to expand my horizon to other sectors or build a dome and it keeps telling me "Too far from drone commander". What is a drone commander and how do I create one? Or replace one? Or buy one? Or whatever?

It's starting to really irritate me at this point that I can't do what I want, because I don't get it (yet).

Please help? :)

The game is telling you that there's no active Drone Hub (or Rover) in the location, you're placing the building in, and thus nothing is able to actually build it.

If you just landed, you can ignore it, since you'll have to place the first drone hub yourself anyway - But once you've gotten the initial set up, you need to invest in additional drone hubs to build outside of that initial zone.

You need a Rover with drones in it, or a drone hub / shuttle with drones. Essentially, you need to be within range of drones, and a drone controller (shuttle / hub / rover)

a drone commander is your portable RC Rover or a drone hub. You can see the radius around both of them when you click on them. Each drone is assigned to one of those, and it will only go to spots in it's section.

Drone hubs, RC rovers, and landers are able to control drones. The radius is the blue hexes on the map when you select the commander.

Haven't found how to switch drones between commanders though.

(Wow... TRIPLE ninja'd... :ranger_techie:)

You can switch by selecting a drone and right clicking on another controller. What I have been struggling with is how to combine two radiuses to get drones to carry supplies to a farther away location (water deposit). I can get them to go to the rover but they won't take the required materials with them :/.

You're awesome! Thank you!

Yeah. Had trouble with that myself last night, trying to get a dome built 5 sectors away near the closest rare metals. Tunnels didn't help. If I had an RC Transporter, I should have been able to manually shuttle materials over, but my sponsor was bankrupt by that point.

It would be a QoL addition to have a map mode that shows all the drone controllable areas.

I find it annoying to have to build a hub just to find out where other hub influence areas are (and overlap). Or I click a single hub and it shows me its area, then when I go to build the next hub I don't see the other hubs areas again.

Map Mode for drone hub area influence please.

What i did was have them harvest out metal (you have to keep re-ordering them because they stop after every unit of metal) then come over with RC Transport and grap metal, much faster than harvesting with transport or drones.

Guys, I did build a drone hub somewhere, but it still doesn't work :S

The building right next to it needs repairs, but it won'd let me, because 'no commander in range'.

Also, I cannot build around the dronehub at all :S

Does it have electricity? Drone hubs need electricity unless you have inventor perk.

I think I fixed it. The hub needed repairs and didn't have the parts nearby. I brought one and the repairs went well!

Thanks for your quick responses, guys!

I have two drone hubs overlapping the area where I need place a metal extractor. When I select it and try to place it I get "Too far from drones". I also have a drone commander and like 8 drones around the area, the game still will not allow me to place the metals extractor. Any idea why??

What I do is I preplace some of the buildings then turn the power off. This halts the building process until the power is back on. Then I place some storage depots near the new dome for metal, concrete and polymer. Then I also place a universal if I have shuttles.

Once you collect enough stuff send the rover over with its drones to start, then once the normal drone hub for that area is active you can leave with the rover.

This is because a metal extractor is an outside workplace. It needs to be placed in the workspace around a dome. You can chese it by placing a dome first, however you are still going to need people to man it from a the dome, unless you have the AI breakthrough.
