Least you forget its been documented in Twilight Zone episode - To Serve Man.
They weren't even taking any resources. I checked all of them so far. none of the surface or deep underground resources were touched.
Even that silly press-conference, as someone already mentioned, assumes that you dismantled one, even if you never did.
And if you destroy the last one (the big one) - you get great rewards, while if you just wait and don't attack - you get pretty much nothing (at the point where it arrives I already have all the wonder techs usually).
I like the overall story of this mystery (the scenario of a "First Contact" with a primitive lifeform), but the way it's done technically is likely the worst of all the mysteries.
Unfortunately there is a very poor presentation of the fact they are huge boring devices taking resources. Mostly because the first reaction most people would have is "Hey get the @#$% out of here."
Its earth.
One look at all the cities we built and they would say "Hey if we just grind these structures into fine sand we can sift it all back home and get all the raw matierials without needing to dig the mantle of the planet."
Yeah, Hawkins said it best, it was a mistake to send transmissions out broadcasting we are here. Because if they can come here, we'll be turned into a slave colony.
So ... feel free to attack the boring devices.
I get it! :-)
But if the resources they look for are living beings, that's another deal.
Yeah, that'll be us.
