A challenge that destroys the fun, why?
Okay, "don´t do them", you might say. As you all know we gamers tend to be a bit compulsive when it comes to challenges and do them regardless of the fun factor.

Having 200 colonists before Sol 100 ... never done this but I am slower than that usually due to map difficulty, so it seems hard but within the games scope. The one challenge I can understand but wouldn´t do, especially knowing about the breeding problem that happens later on.

Selling 100 rare metals? Easy peasy, no challenge at all, this is practically needed in all runs to survive, income is needed at some point.

Having 40 science projects done by Sol 100, this is a game destroyer. It practically forces you to research every low tier project leaving no room for planning, want something researched far up the science tree? Sorry to break it to you, no can do, you need those 40 projects done first to relax. Much easier if you are playing Europe on this one and get the right techs straight away, but maps differ and growth inclucing the number of scientists is by far a guarantee.


There is no real balance between the 3 challenges I have been presented with, one is "okay´ish", one is too easy and the last just ruins the fun.

More probes at the start. Every start has a atleast 2 rockets. As long as you have a stirling, vapor thingy, and fuel factory to make a fuel factory it doesnt matter what is on the first rocket.

No, Church of the New Ark only has 1 rocket, no research either ... and I chose to be a psychologist ... so no additional rockets.

You want any production going for your dome it will have to be ordered from earth with the limited funds you have. No research at all until you get a dome with people.

Choose Church of the New Ark, choose the most difficult area you can find with lowest ressources and at least 3.3.3.3 in disasters .. make a youtube video about how easy it is.

One of Hedgemont (or whatever the name) biggest misgivings on this game is that they wanted to catter to all audience, both hardcore fans of this genre and the casual gamer. You can't do that and, as completely expected for such an endeavor, neither party is really happy with the result.

I am happy with the result. I alter some rules and it works for me. Try not to use more then one passanger rocket with a max of 12 people (one time, win or die with them). Don't use any water pump. Don't use any wind turbine. And last use as mission sponsor "Paradox Interactive" and as profile "Futurist". There you have a nice start.

It really wasnt hard for the achievement. The one rocket was not an issue because I took rocket scientist which gave two rockets.

For every acheievement there is a combo you can take which makes the achievement easier.

My 1st game I succeeded with 43 techs

this game I didn't, NOTHING HAPPENS
You just get a lower score screen on day 100 then the game continues like normal

:) Do you have a hint regarding the starting position, as the closest I found was 42N 110W, but it is not a 3,3,3,3....

Nah ... a map that is divided is more difficult, as the Church your only option for research without a dome are meteors but even those can be blocked by terrain.

Remember, you will need to make fuel fast .... its a lot more urgent with the Church. Its not advisable to put up a dome early on, you need to wait till have a deposit with rare metals, that can take time ... even if that means making a tunnel first ... assuming you can find the metals needed. Rare metals are more important than water, it will be your salvation .... but you need to trade or bring in colonists, cant do both. The child birth rate is the only advantage you have early on ..... more colonists that are direly needed, later on its hell on Mars, they pop out so many babies that I was sad I couldnt convert babies to polymers.

4 water generators ..... 2 for the dome and 2 for the fuel extractors. If you are very lucky to get a farm research you need to turn the extractors on and off to fill up the extra water tanks you have built .... and hope the cold waves dont hit you that hard. If you get a cold wave you need to turn off the fuel extractors if you have a farm.
Stirlings would be nice but you will need to rely on windpower, your cash is direly needed elsewhere.

Sure starting out it might seem a huge difference, but not really.

You still get the sponsser research points tech.
You still get the rover research points tech.
You still have the option of outsourcing.

So the only real thing that happens is you get tech slower. Yet because you have constant meteor showers on that difference is not nearly as much difference. The only issue if elevations changed. However 80 concrete, 20 metal, and 30 machine parts is a SMALL price to place to access those anomalies. Throw a pre-fab stirling that is closed up there and you even have a recharge station.

There is none and no amount of rovers are going to help me initially in that regard. Buildings in my current location use much more power due to icing, a stirling wont get you far.

Getting 40 techs researched by sol 100 will be a miracle. Exporting those 300 metals will still be easy peasy which was the whole point of my original post.

Whatever. I just told you how to do it. You refused to listen and chose to rant more instead.

I already did that achievement. It was not hard.

You missed the entire point. 50 sols in that missing 100-200 research points does not make a difference. It just gives you a slower start. Do something to make up that difference.

Excuse me for saying so but you basically just agreed with me by stating you are not happy with the basic rules, i.e. the basic game.
