metatron mystery : time based or population to advance events?

I started the metatron mystery. Did the first scan.

Just curious, do events progress based on sols passed or population numbers or something else? I would like to build up my colony more before I get to later requirements.

I was asking my question obliquely to prevent spoilers so perhaps I wasn't clear.

The mystery has kicked off. I am doing the scans of various anomalies currently.

Wiki does not have info on when other events start happening. I was just curious if anyone knew what caused those other events to start - time, population, complete X # of scans?
