The trade import amount will be random each time, so you wont really know if you will get what you want.
The trade list will update every so often so the trades they were willing to do will eventually phase out.
It really doesnt have much to do with need, since the AI technically has no need, they dont really exist.
I once traded with China for Food and they had thousands of food, but they had thousands of the item I wanted as well.
Plus you have to have a decent standing with them. You can increase standing by giving them free stuff once or twice.
The trade system can use new logic, its really not as sophisticated as I would like it.
Trades via a tradepad, which you setup and set resources you want versus resources you will give away.
The other colony will come for them on occasion. You get prompted when they accept your tradepad offer and you need to accept or reject. They will come by eventually. You can see progress by clicking the tradepad. Warning, once accepted they keep coming until you run out of resources.
The second type is trade routes, where you click on a rival colony and offer to send them stuff or trade for stuff (or steal stuff etc).
These types require you to nominate a rocket to do the route. It will fill automatically with the stuff if its nearby and drones are available. Just remember it will do this in perpetuity unless you click the button to not repeat it.
That first type, tradepad trade, gets annoying real quick, so I made this mod to automate it.
