Screen goes black when I try to go up the stairs

Screen goes black when I try to go up the stairs after Hawker opens the computer. I have tried opening saved games and validating steam cache. Any thoughts?

Same here. Going back to other saved files has the same result. There isn't another way to progress or go around.

I had the same problem, found a solution in an older forum:

Find file "SL2.exe" ("%Steam%/steamapps/common/Still life 2") and in file properties set compatibility mode to "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" (not 3). It helps me to advance further.

I had the same problem: screen goes black when going up the stairs after Hawker have opened the computer and I try to get the console instuctions for Miller.

Changing compatibility modes did not help me. It seems that it's about what Vic does/doesn't do and/or the order they are done in before asking for Hawker's help. Anyway, this is how I got past the problem:

After entering the charred room I:
-went to balcony and discovered Anderson's blood on the railing and investigated the charred room in its entirety
-phoned Claire and asked about Hawker (this way I get more info on him and get to ask more questions from him)
-investigated the console in charred room and discover that somebody has been trying to fix it (this way I get a new objective and can ask Miller to help with the console)
-go outside, meet Hawker and Miller
-talk to Miller and get him to work on the console
-talk to Hawker and make him mad (SIC!)
-go back upstair in the charred room where Miller asks for a manual
-go find Hawker in the living room, make peace with him, and get him to open the computer
-investigate the computer for all its worth at that time and print out the manual for the console
-am able to go upstairs and give the manual for Miller

Not before I've done all this I go meet the sheriff in the kitchen, get the metal detector, find the hatch, and go once more to the computer to open the hatch. I try to avoid fiddling with the computer any more than necessary! The game froze on another occasion as well when working on the computer, I think somewhere there is the bug.

I'm having the same problem, but i've tried the method given in the old post, changing the settings as suggested here, using this method, and about 10 other combinations. I've even followed walkthroughs exactly. None work. The game is just broken.
Did anyone who got past it happen to keep that save file for directly after? Without it, I can't get any further. Fingers crossed someone can help...

Most walkthroughs will tell you to go to the charred room, then go outside to meet Hawker, then talk to him in the living room then go down to the computer in the basement. But what worked for me was: go to the charred room (make sure you click on console), then go outside to meet Hawker, then go to the KITCHEN and talk to the woman police officer, get the metal detector, find the underground hatch, THEN talk to Hawker in the living room then go down to the computer in the basement. If you do this, there is no black screen when you come back upstairs.

After getting this problem, I went back to the last autosave (save with yellow computer icon on thumbnail) and followed the gamepressure walkthrough from there, and was able to proceed.

(I had also tried setting compatibility mode and it did not seem to make any difference.)

I got it first time heading up stairs from the basement after Miller unlocks the computer. I went the other direction instead, through the morgue and into the kitchen. That seemed to work. I spoke with the cop, though I didn't get the metal detector. Then gave the manual to Miller, got the recording (only connecting the speaker and power cable then). Then, when I leave the room and try to return downstairs again I got the black screen again. Only now there's no other way to go. I'll go back and try doing it in different sequence from the charred room (luckily I have a save just before collecting the blood sampe on the balcony) and see if that makes a difference and post the results.

Compatibility modes made no difference (in fact, I can't remember a single time that has made a difference for me on any Windows platform).

ok i had the same problem with dark screen after going down the stairs from the charred room when i used the console there.

And thats my solution:

My windows is Win10pro 64bit

First i changed the compatibility for sl2.exe to windows xp servicepack 2 (i don´t know if this is necessary). also i made the check at "start as administrator".
