I can't into games

I only just started and i'm already stuck. Literally at the start of the game. No key I have works on any doors, unless clicking the key and then clicking the door isn't what i'm supposed to do for some reason, what else is there? Is there some unnecessary rigamorole i'm supposed to go through to use items?

Right click to open inventory, then left click to select the key, then right click again to use key out of inventory.
