Director's Cut vs. Original Scratches
I played the original game years ago (retail version) and I bought this only for the Last Visit part. I loaded the director's cut for the first time today and was surprised at how awful the skybox looked. I was certain that it looked different when I played the game years ago. It shouldn't have stopped me from playing the game again, but before I knew it I was installing my old retail copy.

Well as it turns out I'm not crazy and the newer version's skybox has a poorly added red hue for whatever reason. Has anyone (who's played the pre-director's cut retail version) noticed any other differences?

I was just starting to try to play the games but I did notice that the sky had a pretty strange red hue. It all looked kind of ugly.

Did you ever manage to change it back to how the original was or is this how the game is supposed to be now?

Swapping files won't work due to the version differences (original vs. director's cut) in the game engine. I think it's just how the new version's built. Fortunately, the red coloring only shows up for the first day (I think), but all the skyboxes look like they were recolored for "realism". It's a pity. I prefer the old, desaturated look from the original.

On the bright side, the Steam version doesn't crash every other fifteen minutes.

Yeah I started playing a bit more yesterday and it seems the reddish sky might supposed to be a pink early sunrise sky. The sky got blueer the later it got. It was kind of neat when you got used to it even though it didn't match the cutscenes (which is kind of weird).

I also noticed two places where they've even forgot to add the sky, when you go up some stairs way high and look out some windows. It's just a great black void. :D

I'm really enjoying though! :)

I owned the old non-steam version and never had crashing problems with it. The Steam version has some slight texture tweaking but it is otherwise the same game. The DC adds a small amount of extra content that is debatable.

Yeah, I've experienced the same thing as you, Haunted.

I'm really glad I've still got my original CD of the "classic version". The new red skybox really kills the immersion for me. While the original looked like a real place, the Director's Cut version looks kind of ridiculous. The whole lighting of the interior of the house seems a lot darker in the DC version, too. It looks like the developers just cranked the contrast up to 11.

However... the DC seems to have higher quality textures, or am I just seeing things?

The red coloring only sticks around for the first day, so the Steam version is worth having (if only now that it's gone from the store and makes a nice novelty piece).

You're not seeing things; they tried to update things as best they could, but this game is hard to sell when everyone's expecting another Outlast or Amnesia.
