I'm at a loss with how to build my trees, I usually am in any game.

There are no guides to Avencast.

Any suggestions on how to build the character? Will update as I progress.

I just used soul magic, with summoning.

Hard to tell- that depends on your prefered style.
Blood magic worked for me.
Blood magic if you want to get close (smack em, crack em ....with your staff)
soul magic for ranged attacks
summons for, well summon creatures... .

Like the op said just soul with summoning is best for me (ranged magic) . Do not try to do a 'hybrid' soul/blood build on your first playthrough because neither will be worth a hoot . Instead put all you skill points into one or the other plus mana and gear up with equipment that mainly enhances your mage class .You will end up with a plenty powerful character . If you want to build a hybrid bada** mage wait until your second playthrough and export your first character to you second one in console .Then you can build the opposite one and have a truely wicked soul/blood mage .And always get a summons no matter how powerful because they run interference for you more than anything .

In the end, I think I crashed the game with the summon build after a certain point and could go no further.
