the Ascent is very very similar.... I started playing it last night, I am only a few hours in but so far it almost looks and feels like a sequel of Ruiner.

Just beaten The Ascent, I have been looking for games similar to it and came across this game, unfortunately aside from the scifi cyberpunk settings these two games have next to nothing in common. Ruiner isn't even an ARPG in a strict sense as it does not have RPG elements in it. If anything, I would say Hotline Miami and Ghostrunner would actually share more similarities to this game than The Ascent.

maybe you are right, after playing some more of the ascent I realized the only thing it has going is the visuals but all the rest is bad, annoying pseudo rpg elements, bugs galore, slow and boring gameplay, confusing everything, annoying back tracking, yeah I had ton more fun with the straight faster brutal and arcadey Ruiner gameplay but each his own I guess.

yeah it looked promising at first and I thought it would be similar enough to Ruiner but nope, gameplay is a snoozefest compared to Ruiner, it´s a lot slower and it lacks the dynamic gameplay, melee weapons combat and take downs and the gunplay is also worse... meh.
has more half assed rpg elements but I couldn´t care less about those.

if you haven´t already I can suggest the Alien Breed remakes, specially the second one was fun and it should be very cheap these days.

yeah they look fun I will take a look. Also ruiner had good gameplay but also had a good mystery cyberpunk vibe as well I couldn't really find that in ascent. Can't understand how that game is so hyped still.

As others mentioned, and from someone who refunded a few days ago, The Ascent is a mess aside from visuals - UI is underwhelming and most times useless, aiming is bad (can't hit anything on stairs for instance), map shouldn't even be called a map, item comparison is a joke of goofy icons. Just seems like they hired one person for each game part, then sold it as a whole.

Basically IMO Ruiner is in a class by itself so much that I still play it (GOG version).

yeah that was my first impression too.

to be fair, I played more of the Ascent (was already past refund time so I kept playing...) meanwhile... it does get better later on in the game.
even gameplay is now fun but it takes a long time of tedious bore before you reach the point where it starts to become engaging and fun because you have more tools, abilities and weapons to toy with and the enemies are more varied and numerous so you need a few more strategies to deal with them, nothing groundbreaking but okay enough and the gameworld is really well done till the end.

Ruiner is a lot more fast and better paced and in your face but the Ascent is not that bad if you keep playing long enough...

they are similar yet very different games at the same time.

if you refunded wait a few patches before re-buying though there are still lots of bugs and issues but I think they will patch most of those in the next weeks/months.

couldn't disagree more about the ascent. The world, atmosphere, lore and gameplay are beyond top notch. Easily my game of the year so far.
