My apologies for the late reply, I just discovered your post today.
As for your resolution question, there is something you can try. There exists a config file:
C:\Users\Jeff\AppData\Roaming\Evermore Game Studios\Puzzle Galaxies\commonConfig.xml
or on a MAC:
/Users/jeffmoretti/Library/Application Support/Evermore Game Studios/Puzzle Galaxies/commonConfig.xml
NOTE: Replace 'Jeff' (or 'jeffmoretti' on a MAC) with the approriate username for your computer.
In this config file you can manually configure options for the game. As for the graphics, there is this tag:
<Resolution>Default</Resolution>
Try replacing the word 'Default' with a resolution. Resolutions have 3 words, such as
800 600 32
This resolution is 800x600 with 32bpp. You can try manually entering in a resolution here and seeing if it will work with the game. Note that if you put a resolution in here that doesnt seem to work with the game, that means the game does not support that resolution for your video card.
The other thing to try with regards to graphics is this:
<DisplayDevice>OpenGL</DisplayDevice>
There are two options you can specify for DisplayDevice. Either:
OpenGL or
D3D
You may want to try D3D (direct 3D) if the openGL options are not working well for you.
Hope this helps! If you have any questions about any of this, or about commonConfig.xml, please reply to this post!
Cheers,
Jeff Moretti

Sorry, forgot to mention one thing - about the black borders, that is completely normal. The game was in development for a long time, practically before the time of widescreen monitors, so support for widescreens was sort of an issue. As such, the black borders were placed in there. Hope this helps!
