At the end i had a food difference (collected overall) of 300%. And one antrace were i hold my ground but could not defeat an enemy race in 2h (ok, i build up long) because the gathered food available on the map could not compansate the lost food through combat or war. And on the other side i had the counterpart race which i could defeat all 3 nests, 2 huge creatures and 1 elite in the same time. And combatlosses were never a problem.
You can choose which antrace you want... food will never be a problem. Even the termits get more food after the last buff with a garanteed food next to the nest.
And enemy colonies do drop food for leafcutters. If the leafcutters deal the finishing blow to the queen, the tiles in the colony will drop leaf chunks.
I've never had a problem as the leafcutters unless I'm fighting wood ants. They are literal steamrollers once they get going, but the level 3 mortar wood ants can wreck the stacked leafcutter ants.
Though uh...with how far you like to take your colony, even that probably won't be enough. That would be neat if there was a "food" slider or something that multiplied how much food objects have in them.
