For the formicarium challenges, level 3 mortars are definitely the best, since you are pitted primarily against swarms of ants. For the formica rufa levels, both are very useful at different parts of them so it's up to your taste (and do try both to try them out).

Taunt has another side effect, it causes the Major to regenerate quite a lot of health.
Is that so? If I knew that, I probably would have had more trouble deciding which one to pick.
Eyup, they regen health, it makes them very, very durable.
Too bad I can't switch to a different type of ant...
