Demo - can't get to surface?

I did the 1st demo (critters), cleared out the entire map and gathered every bit of food, built as many ants as I could (~35 black ants, ~25 workers) and got wiped by the 3 big bugs in the bottom right of the map. Seems like I need more food to beat the map, but there's no more available underground. I can't figure out how to get to the surface. I googled around and found a dev in these forums telling people to either press tab or click on something by the minimap to go to the surface; Tab does nothing and I don't see anything to click on near the minimap.

Also tried the 2019 demo of leafcutters... I am stuck on the part where it tells me to process a leaf because, again, I can't figure out how to get ants to go to the surface and gather leaves. What am I doing wrong?

You can only get to the surface in The Crucible. The other demo levels don't have a surface. With the right strategy there's plenty of food on the map to beat the level.

On The Crucible, you need to dig out the surface tunnel. It's not far from your queen - just mark it for excavation like any other tile and the surface will appear as a new minimap.

i did that but it wont let me put my ants on the surface just the mini map
