It gives the spiders a convincing hat disguise so you don't think they're spiders. Even the most afflicted arachnophobe would be fooled. At the moment it gives them green Christmas elf hats!

Well... If I was that level of a arachnophobe that I can't stand virtual spiders I should be offended that "my phobia" is being treated like it was some kind of joke. Luckly I am not that phobic and instead find it rather funny that you put hats on spiders to hide the fact they are spiders. But if I was that kind of person to get offended for something like it I really had to ask the question: Why did I buy a game about ants and criters in the undergrowth when I am massivly phobic about them? For some reason it doesn't quite fit in my mind to really have the mode as anyone that is phobic should kind of think before they buy what they can't stand.

Well, quite. An arachnophobe on our Facebook page suggested funny hats; we loved the idea so we ran with it. It'll work for some people, it won't work for others. We think we're going to do a version where the hats are bigger and the spiders are invisible.

We're not in the business of being offended on behalf of anyone so we've just had fun with it at the moment. We realise there is more we can do - but as you said, people who are really afraid of creepy crawlies are unlikely to want to play this game anyway.

Well personally I don't really care about offense, there is no reason to pander to it unless you done something that really warrant it. People is always going to be offended, people are always going to hate you no matter what (I work in support and offsite installations, I know people can get really anoyed). If you pander to it you just hurt yourself as you will never be free from people that take offense, what you have to evaluate is if the offense is something you need to care about or not. You having a small joke at people not liking spiders in a game like this, not worthy to care about. Also, I was kind of making a joke about how silly it should be if I actually did take offense. Not sure if it came through.

Love the game however. You just need to focus on rebuilding the cave so you can pick the routes you want. Right now it feels more like Dungeons 2 and 3 with the Dungeon Heart in the middle. The structure doesn't really make sense as any attacker have way to easy to get to the queen.

I used to be scared from spiders, but after I did an expansive research I concluded that they are awesome creatures, with a very important role in the eco system, they regulate other bugs population, in fact some studies claimed that without the spiders we wouldn't be able to sustain large populations because bugs would eat all our crops, as usual Ignorance breed fear.

Hardcore arachnophobe here, to the point that even virtual spiders make my skin crawl. I'll admit that the spiders in this game make me VERY uneasy, and the arachnophobe mode, while hilarious, does nothing to help lol. However, I knew the risk when I bought a game about ants so it's just something I deal with. By all means, don't feel like you need to hold back or water down anything on that front, this game is awesome and I can't wait to see the finish product. (maybe at some point down the line if you do fire ants, make a thing so they spray actual fire and I can burn those eight legged freaks and I will do that as much as possible lol) Also as a disclaimer, I know spiders are awesome and wonderful creatures, but I just don't wanna see them :P

Since this post we've fully implemented arachnophobia mode - you can now replace the spiders entirely with hats.

I was suprized to see some people criticize this mode. I know as a human being we love to feeding our ego by criticizing everything without thinking on it deeply. But adding funny things on spiders is actually amazing idea because this is also a therapy technique about phobias. I know this because i am psychologist. In psychology if a person has a phobia such as spider phobia, you ask him to see a screen in his mind and on that screen see a spider with funny hats, clothes...etc. By adding funny things on a spider is a good method for phobias and using in therapies a lot. So i thank to you for adding this mode. Because it can help some people to defeat their phobias about spiders. I advise to people who has this kind of phobia playing this game.
