Useful: Makes the game slightly easier
Chassis skills:
Essential: Double jump
Useful: Titanium hull, Aluminum hull, PVC Hull (in that order), Dash
Boogan skills:
Essential: None
Useful: Item mastery (but it only works if you have 2 and only 2 of each, so you need the repair combiner)
Questionably useful: Core plating, Battle visor, Energy potential
Jacker skills:
Essential: Hello World, all of the skills that damage or replace robots in alarm sequences or add allies
Useful: Alarm Fail
Jacker has some of the most useful skills in the game, since he is your main source of income and is instrumental in a certain late game part... also every skill you get lowers the alarm time letting you make even more money.
Ghost skills:
Essential: Haste, Urgency
Useful: None
Nakamura skills:
Essential: Luck, Material saving, Repair kits
Useful: Defense Repair, Pricing optimization
Nakamura has the 2nd most useful skills in the game and also has a decent bonus for getting a lot of skills.
I found Jacker's "hack robots" and "hack turrets" skills were a bit weak. 90% of the time I'd end up killing the robot while Jacker was hacking it, and once hacked, it would generally just die instantly. It's far better to get Crash and Burn or Glitch in the Matrix to just kill robots from the start. We Are Legion is incredible, though.
The double jump is one of the most useful skills in the game. Haste doesn't seem good on paper, but you spend so long drifting around in ghost form that it will save you a huge amount of time overall. I waited ages to get it and feel very silly.
I like Boogan's "healing items", because with the regeneration splitter you can just have hundreds of Regen 10s that are actually Regen 30s. Takes a while to get though.
