Pyre

Is Pyre mostly just reading?
I have played Transistor, it was a great game. I wanted to get a new game and I came upon Pyre.

As I was looking through the reviews and after watching the trailer, I can't help but notice that there were a lot of reading.

So, is Pyre mostly reading, or is there an action, fast paced part to it that 'balances' all the reading?

It's a visual novel with mystic sports matches. There are about two hours of sports game and 10 hours of visual novel, so yes, it is mostly reading. Story and characters are great, the sports game is great (enough to make me play versus mode with friends, at least), but if you don't like reading, you're not gonna like the game.

We do have an option to fast-forward text which allows you to hold down a key or button to just read through the text as fast as possible.

The story is really far and wide the best part of the game for me.

The NBA Jam-like gameplay is definitely unique, but it also feels a bit out of place given the nature of the story. I think something more turn-based would probably have been a better fit.

15% Really addcitive mystical sports balls 85% reading an awesome visual novel. Really this game is phenominal in the story department, I haven't been so moved by a story in so long. The game also has a fantastic soundtrack and like I said the gameplay is addictively fun, it took me a while to get used to it adimittedly but it;s fun now.

There's definitely more visual novel/reading than basketball matches, but I would say that it works because - as always - Supergiant's strength is in telling an engaging story with compelling characters.

Bit of a spoiler, but as an example: When you get to the "final" ritual of the game, the Liberation Rite, it turns out that only one of your party members gets to go home if you win. The rest of the team has to wait until the rites start again for another shot at liberation.

During the second Liberation Rite of my first playthrough, there was a brief bit of dialogue where Pamitha silently expressed the hope that they would lose so that her sister Tamitha could go home. (I don't remember why - it might have been because she wanted Tamitha to be happy, it might have been because she knew remaining together in the Downside would be a struggle for both of them... don't know.)

And at that point, I seriously considered throwing the match just to make Pamitha happy. That's how invested I was in these characters, without even being halfway through the game.

its worth noting that a lot of the reading is basically optional, and can be avoided if your just after the action. (though i found myself reading every single thing i possibly could finding none of it tidious in the slightest)

The game goes from 90% reading 10% playing to 10% reading 90% playing.

When you are reaching the ending is pyreball after pyreball, to the point that I was wishing there were more dialogs between the matches.
