The trailer edit of 'In the Flame' is in fact the original version, and the only version we planned to use in the game, for whatever that's worth. It's a very similar case to 'We All Become', from our previous game, Transistor, where the full-length version of the track was created after development was complete, and intended as an exclusive bonus for the soundtrack. We never had plans to use a longer version of 'In the Flame' in Pyre -- we quite simply didn't have room.
I often recommend players not listen to our soundtracks until after experiencing the music of our games in context, as doing so can create specific expectations or reduce some of the sense of surprise you might otherwise get if you heard the music for the first time in the game. Granted, we deliberately promoted the full-length 'In the Flame' prior to the game's launch -- maybe we could have made clearer that it was a soundtrack-only release and would not be heard in the game, so that the expectation around this might have been different. Thanks again for your thoughts here.
Overall though, it was an amazing game that i must play again. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to your future projects!(Enjoy whatever downtime you get from post release, the team deserves it, :D)
To say I also felt the same, OP.
Imo In the Flame was way overdue, and lost impact, not only because of the shorter version, but also because it was so late into the game. I had almost no exiles left (3) and 2 not even my favorites. Also it was right after the adversaries dropped the last Rite and didn't show up.
The song fits a brighter more overture stage of the journey.
It would have been AT THE BEGINNING when you still had the original Trio, plus maybe Tizo, and the Moon Touched Girl. Before the first Liberation Rite.
The song lyrics and vibe also fit the first main stage of the journey- when the bonds of friendship and brotherhood got strengthened and the RITES were at their prime.
Either then or right before the first Liberation Rite perhaps.
When they were still driving on the road, under harsh conditions and with an uncertain future.
Don't you agree?
