Its a shame you can't develop everyone's story on a same playthrough.
I was horrified when it said they had to be "worthy" enough and realized only those 3 were leveled far enough to be picked. I choose Ti-Zo as I was worried Jodi would feel horrible being the first sent and Hedwyn was my best fighter. Ti-Zo became the mascot of the new age, so I'm happy for the little guy.
Did anyone have characters they thought shouldn't go up? I felt like Fae was happier in the less-restricted Downside than she'd be in your more structured society. Ti'zo helped us from the goodness of his adorable little heart, but indicated no interest in going above. (Though, I read what happens if you send him up, and I thought it was cool.)
As an aside, I was surprised how I came around on Bertrude. I was actually going to liberate her, but came to that conclusion at the final Rite, and ended up freeing Orelach instead. I felt awful for how he was abused by the system.
Any opponents you wanted to free? I tried desperately to get Barker in a Liberation Rite, but wasn't successful. I ended up freeing Tamitha because of Pamitha's fervent plea mid-match. I decided that was, in its way, freeing Pamitha. And she basically agreed.
Tizo seemed happy in downside and it has been his home for a long time without him becoming miserable so I wanted to keep him there. With Bertrude it wasn't that I didn't want her to be liberated, it was more that I feel she didn't mind AS much as the others not being liberated as she too had made a home for herself in downside, so she was always near the end on my list.
The only real regrets I had were that the people left behind didn't have the rest of the group to support each other anymore. I felt that the group was actually happy and hopeful while they were a part of the Nightwings in the Rites and it was sad to see my remaining few with not many people left around them.
As for opponents I really wanted to see Dalbert/Almer be liberated but I couldn't bring myself to throw the game at the liberation rite. I gave them every fighting chance though.
I allowed Dalbert/Almer to go free in their rite, won the other 5, and allowed Orelech to go free for the final.
This time through I'm keep Hedwyn and Jodariel a bit longer to get more of their character building.
