Ships won't deal damage
I'm posting this because I can't find any help for this issue online and it's incredibly frustrating.

I've managed to get the game working smoothly enough in Windows 7, my main problem is that the ships's gunners simply will not do any damage to enemies no matter how long I attack them. The enemy pirates in the first mission don't appear capable of damaging me either, so we just endlessly fly around in circles firing harmless bullets at each other. Missiles seem to be working fine, but the guns appear to be completely useless, so it isn't possible to beat this mission.

Has anyone had a similar issue or found any fixes for it?

Right click on game in steam - properties - set parameters of loading - paste that: -32bit -dxlevel 90

Confirming this does work. Thanks to globter for suggesting this solution. I had problems with no gun damage and some graphical artifacts. Just added these two parameters and everything works now:

-32bit -dxlevel 90
tried this fix. still no damage during fights. Help please.

It's a bug that seems to happen in Win 7 and Win8.1 (my OS). I thought the battles were just really involved when I first got it, turns out it's simply bugged. PoS game really...

that may be a setting that works for win 8. may be the dxlevel needs to be set differently for win 7. I have Win 7, how about you guys above? Please specify, so we can determine potential patterns

I had the same issue. I had to set the parameters -32bit -dxlevel 90 and in addition to that enable the compability mode to Windows 98/ME. After that it works fine now.

Yes, this works for me too. Thank you! I also have windows 10 with NVIDIA 1070.

To sum it up:
1. Right click on game in steam
2. Select properties
3. Set launch options... (copy paste: -32bit -dxlevel 90)

4. Now select Local Files tab
5. Browse Local Files
6. The file explorer will open up. Right click on the StarWolves.exe and select Properties
7. On Compatibility tab set compatibility mode to "Windows 98 / Windows Me"
8. Click on Apply then OK
9. Launch the game through steam.

If someone happens to encounter the same problem on windows 10, the only thing you should do is to add -dxlevel 90 to the launch options.

If your mouse feels laggy/stuttery, reduce the polling rate to 125Hz in your mouse software.

I needed to set compatibility for Win98 AND disable the Steam overlay.
