Switching #$%^&^&& weapons

I've got 3-4 different weapons, but when I use the mouse wheel it just shows the weapons at the top of the screen but doesn't actually change to the weapons I want. WTF? Is the game just tormenting me-"Look, here's the machine gun, wouldn't you like to have it as you're being attacked by 35 zombies? Hah, you can't!"? or is there something else I need to do to select a weapon? Same thing happens when I press the number buttons by the way. Any suggestions?

I haven't looked at the control settings but is there anything there to help? Yes at times I have found weapon switching a little more complicated than it should be but I do know that using the number 1 key (not on the number pad) but up top left on the keyboard does allow you to dual wield and bring up other weapons.

I think you have to select the weapon and press your mouse left button. It may be you're using the "menu" option. If you deselect it, pressing the button or scrolling the mouse wheel will change your weapon. Weapon selection is the weakest point of the game indeed
