Sorry to hear you've had so much trouble with this fight; I apologise if what you're meant to do is unclear (it sounds like you're playing well otherwise!). When the Goblin Mage says "You're defenceless...FREEZE!" that's supposed to be a clue that you should 'Defend' - because if you do that, you won't be "defenceless" anymore haha.
Watch the Goblin Mage's crystal ball - if it's blue, he's about to use his Freeze attack. When you see this, choose the 'Defend' command and he'll fail to Freeze you (also won't do any damage) and you'll be able to have your next turn without any penalties. The Mage has 28 HP, after which you can finish him.
Anyway, I'm sorry for trouble (and the delay in responding - it's been a busy time of year haha), but I hope that helps!
Wow. Didn't expect it to be that easy to just defend. I guess I should've caught that myself when I was playing, but I didn't get any hints in the fight to tell me I should defend, other than apparently that dialogue (which was accompanied by the freeze attack anyway, so I couldn't have defended that turn). I'll try that the next time I play, though. Thanks for the advice.
Also, it's no problem on the delay. It's the holidays. I figured there might be some delay if only because of that. I hope you're having a happy one, though.
Yep, it's just a matter of Defending - not that the battle's a cakewalk even with that knowledge though =P Oh, not at all - I completely understand the confusion. The game's designed to have a limited tool set, and so the challenge on my part was to build encounters that use that limited tool set in slightly different ways. My mindset when designing that encounter was that the player will get caught up in the attack the first time - just to show what happens - and then they'd attempt to overcome it on the next turn; because otherwise (as you found) it's pretty much impossible to win XD Sorry about any frustration.
My pleasure! Thanks for your question, and I hope the rest of the game is smooth sailing for you. And I really appreciate your patience and kind words! I've been having a very happy holidays, thank you - I hope you've been having the same =D And please just let me know if you run into any more trouble!
All the best,
Josh
