Is Uplay required to play ?

Yeah it does. Pretty much all Ubi games do cause it launches through Uplay so you need it installed and logged in.

go to store page and on right side of page it says Single player blah blah etc. in the pee yellow boxes says the TandA and uplay required

Why buy it on Steam at all then? I mean, all the keys available from places like gmg are for Uplay and much cheaper, it released way earlier on Uplay and you have to use Uplay even if you get it on Steam...

Just curious as to peoples motives.

simple answer from me is that I never use u.play nowadays, and saw it on Steam and looked sadly not on what the game calls for before I ordered it.
