Well, stay away from Ghostmode, you will not like it because selecting correct weapon setup for your Skills is essential
To be clear: I have NEVER encountered a situation you cannot solve with either Sniper, ASR/SMG, HDG and the many devices you carry (Grenades, Mines, C4, Drone, etc). Ghostmode is harder, but doable - correct choice matters more.
This issue only happens, if you are rather new (inexperienced).. PLUS go with Shotgun(+SMG)+Handgun as you lack range/dmg.. or buy Shop-ASRs without GrenLauncher (so basically SMG) and combine it with Shotgun /Hangun, while trying to fight Reinforcments/Unidad. In this context Crossbow is also bad (no Penetration).. that´s why players should read Gear Guides
TLDR:"Learn2Play" in my book
Btw, you´re right Crossbow is a Stealth-specialist weapon (zero noise) and LMG has only 1 silent option (2 with DLC). The great thing about Wildlands is that you need to be skilled with every weapon in your Loadout, not just Sniper rifle
check this Guide for whole weapon pool of Wildlands.. (+ where to get it & Best-in-Slot)

Indeed. Sadly, only cosmetic.. not Hitman level of Disguise
