I used both, but eventually stopped using the grenade launcher and instead took the grip. I found that the gun itself provided enough firepower and that the grenade launcher was rarely if ever needed. Also, I always enjoyed when my ARs had better handling.

Disagree wholeheartedly.
The underbarrel grenade launcher is paramount to quickly bring down helicopters, especially if you are playing Extreme difficulty and Tier mode and haven't upgraded your large-damage .50 cal sniper rifle damage significantly, or machine gun damage (yet). It has saved my bacon many, many times.

That is the fun with the game. Almost everything works and it comes down to what one would like best.

I only use AR because of the nade launchers. Otherwise I would go full LMG. The nades are good to kill vehicles or helicopters when you're in a bad spot, and plus, they do it quickly and effective
